What a HOOT!

by Kelly Hoernig for Linnie Blooms

When asked to create a fall piece out of the wonderful Linnie Blooms canvas shapes, I set out to make a home décor item that you could use with your favorite photo or quote. For years I have collected headlines and words out of magazines and that is what I used for my quote. I love how it incorporates a great sentiment without going overboard. It complements the simplicity of the owl beautifully and I couldn’t have found a more perfect word. I used an old Tinker Toy as the word holder adding nostalgia and a vintage quality to the art.
The background is a paper napkin that I have decoupaged to a piece of 2x4 wood. I enhanced it by adding the dark trees because I wanted a little more contrast. The little hootie needed to grab your attention so I gave her eyelashes and a charming antique button with a lot of detail to look like chest feathers. I loved the addition of the various leaves and having them placed around the top edge really makes they stand out. They also break the shape of the wood block making people wonder what the piece is created on.

So, what are you waiting for? Imagine what your sweet HoOT will look like and I do hope you will share what you create! Enjoy.

The Buckeye by Kelly Hoernig

A little bit about the inspiration and piece…

I wanted to use the Linnie Blooms large butterfly and house shape for this project. So I looked around at what could be found at the local craft store and saw this charming little paint bucket. Well, I knew this would work for whatever I wanted to do so I bought it. When I got it home, I started looking through my ephemera and found a stack of library cards. I like to let the book names inspire the art and sure enough there was a card for “the Buckeye State of Ohio”. I remembered that there was a butterfly called the buckeye so looked it up and saw the beautiful markings you see on the painted sample. We are lucky enough to have the real ones in our area and they really do look this beautiful! I wanted a map of Ohio but when searching on our Indiana map saw the Ohio state line and the Ohio river, close enough, right. So that was how I started putting this fun piece together. I do hope you enjoy the video and also find some great uses for the many wonderful shapes in the Linnie Blooms product line. Happy Shopping!

Creatively yours, Kelly Hoernig :D

Meet the Designers - Kelly Hoernig

Hello from Indiana! I am a creative junkie, curious by nature and find inspiration everywhere. I have a fine arts degree but have made my living as a full time artist for the past 15 years in the Decorative Painting market. I love to design, teach locally and online, travel teach across the US and spread creative inspiration whenever possible. Acrylics are my first love followed by colored pencils, mixed media, art journaling, photography and writing. Enough about me, let's get this artistic adventure started, woohoo!
Here is a pdf with the complete tutorial on how Kelly created this beautiful piece:   Incognito Tutorial
